The Soul.
Man himself is a soul.
“And the
LORD God formed man [of] the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life; and man became a living soul.” (Ge 2:7 AV)
“And so
it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam [was
made] a quickening spirit.” (1Co 15:45 AV)
“Which
sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the
days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls
were saved by water.” (1Pe 3:20 AV)
“If a man
be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and maketh
merchandise of him, or selleth him; then that thief shall die; and thou shalt
put evil away from among you.” (De 24:7 AV)
Human soul dies.
“Who can
count the dust of Jacob, and the number of the fourth [part] of Israel? Let me
die the death of the righteous, and let my last end be like his!” (Nu 23:10 AV)
“And
saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and
watch.” (Mr 14:34 AV)
“Behold,
all souls are mine; as the soul of the father, so also the soul of the son is
mine: the soul that sinneth, it shall die.” (Eze 18:4 AV)
“And it
shall come to pass, [that] every soul, which will not hear that prophet, shall
be destroyed from among the people.” (Ac 3:23 AV)
“Then
said Jesus unto them, I will ask you one thing; Is it lawful on the sabbath
days to do good, or to do evil? to save life, or to destroy [it]?” (Lu 6:9 AV)
Lower placed animals are
also called souls.
“And levy
a tribute unto the LORD of the men of war which went out to battle: one soul of
five hundred, [both] of the persons, and of the beeves, and of the asses, and
of the sheep:” (Nu 31:28 AV)
“And God
created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters
brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his
kind: and God saw that [it was] good.” (Ge 1:21 AV)
“And God
said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and
creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.” (Ge 1:24
AV)
Those souls die as well.
“And the
second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a
dead [man]: and every living soul died in the sea.” (Re 16:3 AV)
“And he
that killeth a beast shall make it good; beast for beast.” (Le 24:18 AV)
Soul not the same as
ghost.
“For the
word of God [is] quick, and powerful, and sharper than any twoedged sword,
piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and
marrow, and [is] a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” (Heb
4:12 AV)
“Who
knoweth not in all these that the hand of the LORD hath wrought this? In whose
hand [is] the soul of every living thing, and the breath of all mankind.” (Job
12:9-10 AV)
“And the
very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and [I pray God] your whole spirit and
soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
(1Th 5:23 AV)
“But to
which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make
thine enemies thy footstool? Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth
to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?” (Heb 1:13-14 AV)
“God [is]
a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship [him] in spirit and in truth.”
(Joh 4:24 AV)
Ghost who returns to God
is the working lifeforce which is kept in life by breathing.
“Then
shall the dust return to the earth as it was: and the spirit shall return unto
God who gave it.” (Ec 12:7 AV)
“And
after three days and an half the Spirit of life from God entered into them, and
they stood upon their feet; and great fear fell upon them which saw them.” (Re
11:11 AV)
“All the
while my breath [is] in me, and the spirit of God [is] in my nostrils; My lips
shall not speak wickedness, nor my tongue utter deceit.” (Job 27:3-4 AV)
“Thou
hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die,
and return to their dust.” (Ps 104:29 AV)
When the ghost goes out of
the body, the conscious life ends.
“His
breath goeth forth, he returneth to his earth; in that very day his thoughts
perish.” (Ps 146:4 AV)
“Thou
hidest thy face, they are troubled: thou takest away their breath, they die,
and return to their dust.” (Ps 104:29 AV)
The soul needs the breath
to stay in life.
“So that
my soul chooseth strangling, [and] death rather than my life.” (Job 7:15 AV)
“And they
smote all the souls that [were] therein with the edge of the sword, utterly
destroying [them]: there was not any left to breathe: and he burnt Hazor with
fire.” (Jos 11:11 AV)
“All in
whose nostrils [was] the breath of life, of all that [was] in the dry [land],
died.” (Ge 7:22 AV)
Souls have blood.
“And
surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand of every beast will
I require it, and at the hand of man; at the hand of every man’s brother will I
require the life of man.” (Ge 9:5 AV)
“Also in
thy skirts is found the blood of the souls of the poor innocents: I have not
found it by secret search, but upon all these.” (Jer 2:34 AV)
“Her
princes in the midst thereof [are] like wolves ravening the prey, to shed
blood, [and] to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.” (Eze 22:27 AV)
Souls can be killed by the
sword.
“and
Jehovah delivered Lachish into the hand of Israel; and he took it on the second
day, and smote it with the edge of the sword, and all the souls that were
therein, according to all that he had done to Libnah.” (Jos 10:32 ASV)
“And they
smote all the souls that were therein with the edge of the sword, utterly
destroying them; there was none left that breathed: and he burnt Hazor with fire.”
(Jos 11:11 ASV)
“Soul” can relate to a
person as a soul.
“And he
communed with them, saying, If it be your mind that I should bury my dead out
of my sight; hear me, and intreat for me to Ephron the son of Zohar,” (Ge 23:8
AV)
“The land
also shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her sabbaths, while she lieth
desolate without them: and they shall accept of the punishment of their
iniquity: because, even because they despised my judgments, and because their
soul abhorred my statutes.” (Le 26:43 AV)
“My soul
melteth for heaviness: strengthen thou me according unto thy word.” (Ps 119:28
AV)
“And it
came to pass, when he had made an end of speaking unto Saul, that the soul of
Jonathan was knit with the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own
soul.” (1Sa 18:1 AV)
“I will
greatly rejoice in the LORD, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for he hath
clothed me with the garments of salvation, he hath covered me with the robe of
righteousness, as a bridegroom decketh [himself] with ornaments, and as a bride
adorneth [herself] with her jewels.” (Isa 61:10 AV)
“Soul” sometimes relates
to “life” that one has as a soul.
“And it
came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said, Escape for
thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the plain; escape to
the mountain, lest thou be consumed.” (Ge 19:17 AV)
“And it
came to pass, as her soul was in departing, (for she died) that she called his
name Benoni: but his father called him Benjamin.” (Ge 35:18 AV)
“For what
is a man profited, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? or
what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” (Mt 16:26 AV)
“For
whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life
for my sake, the same shall save it.” (Lu 9:24 AV)
“Soul” can relate to the
future life.
“And fear
not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather
fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Mt 10:28 AV)
“In your
patience possess ye your souls.” (Lu 21:19 AV)
Freedom of dead souls from
Sjeool (Hades) by resurrection is promised.
“And the
sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead
which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.”
(Re 20:13 AV)
“Because
thou wilt not leave my soul in hell, neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to
see corruption.” (Ac 2:27 AV)
“For thou
wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see
corruption.” (Ps 16:10 AV)
